Nimzowitsch Letters

Letter to G. A. K Nielsen

16.9.1927

Letter in which Nimzowitsch is trying to arrange an evening in Sønderborg Skakklub. From this letter we can conclude the following important things:
  1. Nimzowitsh wrote 11 as ii (that is the digit 1 with a dot above). This peculiar habit has caused some people to believe that Nimzowitsch was not born November 7, but February 7. Nimzowitsch lived in Øster Farimagsgade 11, so the letter definitely proves that ii should be interpreted as 11 and not as II (2).
  2. "Mein System" was not published in the period of 1925-26 as most experts tend to believe. The last installment was published in 1927.
  3. A number of different transcriptions of Nimzowitsch name has been seen. One of the most wide spread is Niemsowitsch, which was very consistently used before the war. After the war the "e" disappeared from his name, and his letters proves that he spelled his name N-i-m-z-o-w-i-t-s-c-h.

If have chosen to publish this letter on three separate pages. First a page which gives the original text in Danish. Secondly a page where my translation to English can be seen, and finally the letter in a scanned version. I am sure the task of translating this letter into English exceeds my ability, as it is quite difficult to keep "the Nimzo touch" as we know it from my system. Any improvements to the translation will be very welcomed.
